Last weekend we wanted try someplace new for camping so, we made the 4.5 hour trek to Great Basin National Park. It was absolutely beautiful and we ended up with the best site in the whole camp ground!
We had our own personal bridge into our campsite!
We needed our own bridge because our campsite had streams running on 3 sides of it.
We set-up our tent between 2 of the streams and the sound of running water was amazing!
The camp ground had amazing aspen trees. They were a bit past their color changing prime but, as you can see...
...we still saw some brilliant fall colors, florescent even.
We arrived to camp around 2 on Saturday and set-p camp. The rest of the day we explored our campsite.
We did a provisions run down to the closest town but then, it was right back to camp.
Abby LOVES the campfire!!
Kera decided at 7 pm that she was ready for bed. We were surprised but didn't argue with her. Abby stayed up with us and enjoyed the fire and the s'mores.
Saturday night was 35 degrees...cold but manageable.
On Sunday morning we went into town for breakfast and then headed out for a 6 mile hike.
After the hike all of our feet were a bit tired but, we had the perfect solution...a nice foot soak in our stream.
Plus, a yummy lunch of PB&J.
On our hike and in our campsite we saw some wild turkey!
Through out the weekend we also saw some mule deer, I saw a fox, and on our drive back home Jim and I saw a few coyotes.
Here are a few more pictures from our campsite...
Even though we were having a great time Jim an I were starting to question whether or not we should stay for the second night, like we had planned or, head home after dinner. Saturday night was 35 but Sunday night was supposed to be even colder.
As we were pondering if we should stay or not we headed to the visitor center to looked around and have some hot cocoa in their little café. We decided, with major influence from the girls, to stay the second night.
So, we headed back to Baker for dinner; the same restaurant we had breakfast, LectroLux Café.
On our way back from dinner we watched at the temperature gage on our car get lower and lower. When we got back to our site it was 36 degrees! It was going to be a COLD night!!
Again on Sunday night Kera decided that 7 pm was her bed time so, off she went. Quickly after Kera went to bed I discovered that my keys were missing. I had NO idea where they could be. My only guess is that I had dropped them at the restaurant. I left the girls and Jim behind and headed back to the restaurant to look for them. Unfortunately, they were not there...grrrrrrrrrr! Only thing left to do was to scour the campsite in the morning.
After some good campfire time the rest of us headed off to bed. I slept in as many clothes as I could including a hat, hooded fleece, and gloves. IT WAS COLD! Most of the night was spend shivering and playing rotating sleeping bags with Abby and Jim. The only one that seemed to be unaffected by the cold was Kera. She slept through the night without stirring once.
In the morning while breaking camp I checked the car temperature gage...
...and this was at 8 am which means that is was probably a low of around 25! It was so cold that Chewy was shivering, his water bowl froze over, and there was ice on top of the tent (even though it didn't rain).
As we were breaking camp the girls hung out in the car because their poor fingers and toes were frozen, especially Kera's. Her poor little piggies were like ice cubes. While in the car Abby found my keys!! Somehow they were in her car seat?!? I have no clue how they got there but I was so thankful that they were found.
Even with the cold we had a great weekend and we will definitely make a return trip to Great Basin National Park but, I think we will wait for summer!
